New Mexico

After camping Tuesday night in Brantley Lake State Park with the large population of jackrabbits that live there, I got up Wednesday morning to drive to Carlsbad Caverns National Park.  I went on a self-guided tour of the Big Room, and also did a guided tour of King's Palace.  I feel like a took a million oddly lit, blurry pictures inside the caverns, but here's a handful that turned out okay:

Inside the caverns I met the nicest couple, Sue and Larry, who were kind enough to let me tag along with them while we talked about our respective traveling adventures.  They are part of a cool group called Walking Connections, which has allowed them to take hikes all over the world, and they even lead hikes at the Grand Canyon.  I hope that when I'm their age (70s?) I'm still running around like that.

Next, I headed to Roswell.  I first visited the UFO Museum.

All of the light posts in downtown Roswell are like that.

The museum started with a basic history of the "event", with newspaper clippings, photos and witness accounts.  It got weirder as I went on, and I finally arrived at an exhibit showing how to know if you've been abducted by aliens.  One way is apparently to shine a black light over your body to look for fluorescence:

I also learned that the town closest to Area 51 is Rachel, Nevada.  The big business in Rachel is a Gas Station-Store-Trailer Park.  I'm so proud.

A few more oddities in Roswell:

I then headed on my way to Santa Fe, where I would be staying in a hostel for the night.  However, I was stopped on my way due to a recently started wildfire that blazed across the highway.  What you see below happened over the course of about ten minutes:

Luckily for me, once the fire passed the road, the authorities let us pass.  You are probably aware of the wildfire blazing in Arizona right now.  Well, the smoke has reached Santa Fe.  As I approached the city, for miles I could see a growing cloud of smoke.  It's so thick that you can barely see the sun in the afternoon, and the moon is nonexistent at night.  Santa Fe is over 200 miles from where the fire is now, so I'm not really sure what I'm going to experience as I continue to head west.

More photos of Santa Fe to come!

I hope you don't get abducted by aliens or burned up by wildfires. You are so organized! Sounds like you're having very cool experiences.

Also...I figured out why your comments are so weird. Since they are imbedded instead of a pop-up window, it does the verification code weird. I click "post comment," but it doesn't post. It actually reloads the page to then have you enter the code. Unless you wait for that to happen, you won't even realize it didn't post.

Hope that helps. Love you!!!!
